Kimberly-Clark Advances Alternative Natural Fiber Innovation with Drought-Tolerant Hesperaloe Plant

Global hygiene giant Kimberly-Clark announced on August 3 the rollout of its Alternative Natural Fiber Innovation Program, focusing on the research and development of high-performance, sustainable plant-based fibers to reshape raw material supply for disposable hygiene goods.
The material research initiative spans more than two decades. Driven by global challenges including raw material cost fluctuations, sustainable resource shortages and supply chain stability pressure, Kimberly-Clark started screening substitutes for conventional wood pulp fiber long ago. Its R&D team systematically assessed over 70 kinds of candidate materials, ranging from agricultural residues like wheat straw and corn stalks to bamboo, seaweed and algae, testing each option for fiber performance, sustainability, process feasibility and commercial cost.
After cumulative R&D investment exceeding 250 million US dollars, Hesperaloe, a succulent plant originating from the arid regions of the Southwestern United States, was selected as the core research object.
Adapted naturally to dry environments, Hesperaloe requires minimal water for growth, greatly lowering the ecological cost of large-scale planting. In terms of fiber characteristics, Hesperaloe features long length and fine diameter, which enables it to combine strength and softness simultaneously — two vital properties for tissues, toilet paper, diapers and sanitary napkins. Laboratory tests confirm that hygiene products manufactured with Hesperaloe fiber deliver optimized liquid absorption, skin-friendly touch and structural stability compared with traditional wood pulp products.
Craig Slavtcheff, Chief R&D Officer of Kimberly-Clark, stated that early experimental data is encouraging, and the new plant fiber system is expected to become a foundational innovation platform for hygiene material upgrades. Up to now, Kimberly-Clark has secured more than 30 patents related to Hesperaloe fiber technology, continuously conducting performance verification and scalable production research.
To realize industrial transformation from laboratory technology, Kimberly-Clark is building a Hesperaloe fiber pilot factory in Yuma, Arizona. Covering an area of 50,000 square feet with total investment over $100 million, the factory will optimize fiber extraction techniques, expand production capacity and carry out product application tests, and is planned to be officially operational in 2027 to support future commercial mass production.
In parallel, Kimberly-Clark partners with growers, technical experts and local communities across Arizona, California and the American Southwest to evaluate the long-term agricultural planting value of Hesperaloe.
